About the Story

They and many others come along with them in the hopes of finding better jobs. The group includes many people such as former preacher Jim Casy, the young and nervous Connie Rivers and his pregnant wife Rose of Sharon, many Joad children including the mentally troubled Noah, Granma and Granpa Joad and eventually the Wainwright family.
The story covers many points that evolve as the story goes along. These include such aspects as the ongoing conflict between Connie and Rose of Sharon and Connie’s worries about marriage, Granpa’s failing health and the issues that come along with working in California like not having worker’s rights or the problems that have come with the New Deal that was passed in the hopes of resolving issues.
There are many additional chapters throughout the book that showcase the general environment of the Depression. These include scenes of those who were trying to get and the desolate nature of the land amid economic failures, unfavorable weather conditions and the underlying fear of the pending war in Europe.
